SJC Physical Therapy Launches Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Program

The Physical Therapy (PT) course of St. Jude College’s School of Rehabilitation Sciences is now offering a program on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture (TCMA). Consisting of academic and clinical fields of study, this PT curriculum is duly recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

With this CHED recognition, the PT course of St. Jude College is the first and only PT curriculum in the Philippines that offers both academic and clinical fields of study in TCMA. Upon graduation, the St. Jude PT graduate becomes eligible to take the international License in Acupuncture (LAc).

Based on an international Memorandum of Understanding between St. Jude College and distinguished schools and hospitals in the People’s Republic of China, there will be an exclusive faculty and student exchange program among these institutions. The academic study will be held at St. Jude College Manila, while the clinical study will be taken at Zhaoqing Medical College and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Hospital in Guangdong Province, and the Liuzhou Medical College and Tumor Hospital in Guangxi Province.

Dr. Melecio Pena III, dean of St. Jude’s School of Rehabilitation Sciences and a diplomate and fellow of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, underwent training (with certificate) in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture at Liuzhou Medical College and Tumor Hospital. Mr. Franz-Anton C. Lim, a PT clinical intern, also trained in Liuzhou as part of the World Class Rehabilitation Scientists PT Clinical Internship Program.

This revised curriculum of St. Jude’s Physical Therapy course will be offered starting the First Semester of School Year 2008-2009.
