Napolcom visits SJC!!!

Over the past years, government has come to realize that to succeed in fighting criminality, the support of all sectors of the community is important. The involvement of local officials (especially at the barangay level), school and communities in a well orchestrated and coordinated manner is an important resource for combating this social menace.

While government is not remiss in addressing criminality, previous initiatives to suppress crime tended to focus on the resources of the criminal justice system where activities after the commission of crime are primarily undertaken. With regards to the drug problem, efforts were geared toward the rehabilitation of victims of drug abuse and the prosecution of drug cases rather than the prevention of the drug problem itself through public information and education,. As scarce resources are even stretched to their limits, government faces the difficulty of solving these problems alone by itself.

Today, crime and drug abuse are on the upswing. They have posed a challenge on the law enforcement agencies to develop plans, strategies, programs and projects that are designed to reduce the incidence of both crime and drug dependency. To meet this seemingly insurmountable call, the National Police Commission (Napolcom) believing that the most effective way of reducing crime and drug abuse is by preventing their commission, made on concerted push –the evolvement and intensified implementation of crime and drug dependency prevention projects that would harness the participation and meaningful involvement of the various sectors of the community.

A significant crime prevention project of the Commission is the nationwide conduct of seminar-workshops on Crime Prevention and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control like the one held here in St. Jude College last November 12, 2008 which was initiated by the Office of the Student Affairs and Services with guest speakers; Police Insp. Henry Elmido of Napolcom –NCR and Asec. Rommel Garcia, Director for Operations of the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB). The OSAS also held a film viewing at the gymnasium about the different modus-operandi done by crime syndicates for the Thaddean community awareness.

It is hoped that sectors of the society will realize that crime and drug abuse are social problems that must be a major concern of every citizen. And when allied with the law enforcement arm of the government, the community involvement will definitely contribute towards a safer, more secure and stable society.
